The craft and architectural methodologies of Native Americans are examples of expert utilization of nature as a resource. Organic materials provide the backbone for this aesthetic, making a resourceful application of the sacred earth desirable and reverential. In the tundra, one slaughtered animal yields abundant food and warm clothing for large families. On the waterfront, thin reeds are woven into a strong fabric that is used to both make clothing and build homes. This broad application of technique has inspired me to investigate Native American culture and craft. I work with their indigenous forms and textures by applying a contemporary artistry to them. Sprawling chain grows on itself to become a textured tapestry, woven around sensual metal objects. Repetitive line design is also evocative of weaving and the glorified symbolism of eagle feathers. The color palette of the enamels incorporates muted modesty with the dynamic spectrum of colors found in nature. Suspended forms freely swing in a movement commonly seen in the ritual dances of Native American origin. I react to these cultural components in order to execute an abstraction of tradition.
